Braille Displays:
The Need
Current Technology
• More than 1.3 million blind Americans have virtually no access to education and/or employment
• A Braille display is essential for the blind to access education and employment in today's computer reliant society
• Yet, less than 3% of the blind population own a Braille display – too expensive!
• There is a 70% unemployment rate among the blind. 80% of those able to work use Braille displays
• Greater access to Braille displays would radically enhance the quality of life of more than 400,000 children with visual impairments
• Costs and size constraints limit most Braille displays to only a single line of text resulting in capability to “read” one text line at a time and no access to tables nor graphics
• A traditional Braille unit displays only a single line of 40 characters, equivalent to about 5 words
• Existing Braille displays are inadequate and unavailable to users
• Braille displays are prohibitively expensive ($5,000 to over $16,000 per display)
